Frequently Asked Questions About LASIK From Our Kansa and Missouri City Optometrist

While glasses and contacts can help you see correctly, they can be a hassle at times. Fortunately, there is a treatment that can help you do away with glasses and contacts forever. It is called Lasik.

What Is Lasik?

Lasik is a laser surgery procedure that can help treat your refractive errors. The procedure is non-invasive, and the surgery takes just a few minutes.

Who Is Good Candidate For Lasik?

There are certain criteria that your eye doctor will look for to determine whether or not you are a good candidate. The criteria of a good candidate are as follows:

Your eyes must be mature which occurs when you are between 18 and 21-years-old.

If you are nearsighted, your prescription must be no higher than -11.00. If you are farsighted, your prescription must be no higher than +5.00. If you have astigmatism, your prescription must be no higher than 5.00.

You must be in good physical health.

Your eyes must be free of disease.

Who Is a Bad Candidate For Lasik?

There are certain issues that would make you a poor candidate for the surgery, and you wouldn't be able to have the procedure.

If you are under 18-years-old and your eyes haven't fully matured yet.

If you have a very high prescription that does not fit with the suggested parameters.

If you have an auto-immune disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or Lupus.

If you have any diseases of the eye such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and chronic dry eye syndrome.

If you are pregnant or nursing.

Preoperative/Postoperative Concerns

Before you can have Lasik surgery, you will need to have an exam. This will determine whether or not you are a good candidate. If you wear contacts, you will need to stop wearing them for three weeks before the surgery. If you wear gas permeable lenses, you will need to stop wearing them for a month before the surgery.

After the procedure, you will need someone to drive you home as your vision will be blurry. Your eye doctor will recommend that you take a nap when you get home while wearing your protective goggles. When you wake up, your vision should have significantly improved.
