Computer Vision Syndrome Treatment and Prevention With Our Optometry Team

Most of us use technology on a daily basis (for an average of 7 hours!). Despite all the benefits this affords us, smartphones and computers can cause us temporary eye discomfort and may increase our risk for certain vision problems. At the Epic Vision Eye Centers of Kansas and Missouri, our optometry team makes sure all our patients are aware of this increasingly common condition.

What is Computer Vision?

Also known as digital eye strain, computer vision syndrome causes eye discomfort and vision problems after looking at a computer screen for too long. It's caused by a variety of factors specific to digital technology use:

  • We tend to blink less while using computers. This causes eyes to dry out.
  • Our eyes have to work hard to focus on images, videos, and text on a screen, especially if we stare for too long or sit too close to the screen.
  • Bright lights, high contrast, and glare can fatigue the eyes. Blue light, in particular, is known to be high energy and is found in high concentrations in digital devices; blue light can deeply penetrate the eye and damage the retinas.
  • Many people tend to have poor slouched posture while using phones or computers, which can lead to additional issues.

If you regularly use computers or smartphones and have an uncorrected vision problem (or if you have an old vision correction prescription), then the effects of computer vision could be even more amplified.

Are There Signs and Symptoms of Computer Vision?

Up to 90% of people who use computers experience at least some of the following computer vision symptoms:

  • Dry, itchy, and tired eyes
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Blurry vision

What Can I Do to Avoid Computer Vision?

Remember this numerical tip: 20/20/20. Every 20 minutes, give your eyes a 20-second break and look at something about 20 feet away.

Other tips include:

  • Improve your posture.
  • Try to consciously blink more.
  • Remove the overhead and harsh glare.
  • Improve the contrast on your screen.
  • Consider downloading apps or installing screens that can reduce blue light emissions.
  • Get an eye exam with an optometrist to ensure you have no underlying vision correction errors. We may be able to prescribe your glasses with a specialized coating to reduce glare.
