Corrective Eyewear Can Treat Presbyopia

Presbyopia is an age-related condition that makes it difficult to see close-up objects. It often occurs after the age of 40 and will continue to worsen over time. With the help of our eye doctors at our Missouri and Kansas Epic Vision Eye Centers, your vision can improve.

.

Typical Causes of Presbyopia

The lens of your eye is flexible and can change its shape with the help of the muscle that surrounds it. When you look at an object in the distance, the muscle relaxes. When you look at something close-up, it contracts. The flexibility of the lens is what allows you to focus at various distances. If you have presbyopia, the lens becomes hard and loses its focusing ability. Mainly, the cause of this vision condition is due to age, but other problems can bring forth presbyopia, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and multiple sclerosis.

What Are the Symptoms Of Presbyopia?

The symptoms of presbyopia often come on gradually, and you may begin to experience the following after the age of 40:

  • Sudden loss of close-up vision in one eye
  • An abrupt onset of hazy or blurry vision
  • Seeing flashes of light or black spots
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Experiencing double vision
  • Needing to hold reading materials far from your face to view it correctly

Diagnosing Presbyopia

Presbyopia can be diagnosed during your eye exam. During the exam, your optometrist will take a medical history and then perform a refractive test, which is an assessment that determines if you have nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, or astigmatism. It is not uncommon to be diagnosed with more than one of these conditions. Your eye doctor will also dilate your eyes to conclude if there is an underlying condition causing your vision problems.

Optometry Treatment for Presbyopia

There are a few treatment options available for presbyopia, and they include:

  • Eyeglasses: If presbyopia is the only refractive error that you have, your eye doctor in Kansas and Missouri will prescribe you with reading glasses. However, they will need to be removed when you are not using it to read.
  • Contact Lenses: If you prefer not to wear glasses, you can try contact lenses to correct your vision, but this treatment option may not be right for you if you have problems with your tear ducts or eyelids.
  • LASIK Surgery: LASIK surgery can improve your vision by gently reshaping your cornea.
